I lost my right eye due to an assault on 2015. I had a socket and lid repair surgery done at the Lagos state University teaching hospital, Ikeja. After which I was referred to see Dr Okpara for a custom made artificial eye. Since 2016, I have been wearing a custom made prosthesis in the right eye. This looks real, and people hardly tell the difference. My friends think I see with my right eye.

I lost my left eye as a kid, when struggling for a bottle of coke with my twin sister, after which I developed a shrunken eye ball (pthisis bulbi). I didn’t want to wear a prosthesis, because of the awful look I see in people wearing them. I visited an ophthalmic surgeon who recommended I get the customised one from Dr Okpara. At first I didn’t believe it is possible. Though I had some challenges with comfort after fitting, but Dr Okpara was able to guide me through those times, I feel better now.

My expectations were met when I started wearing a custom made artificial eye. My eye was removed due to severe and unbearable pains. I tried getting a custom made prosthesis from a quack, but it keeps falling off in public. I was referred from University College Hospital to see the ocularist. My eye looks as good as the functioning eye. I am actually his first Nigerian patient.

I visited the ocularist in October 2017 following a referral from an optometrist. I had a fungal infection in the left eye which was badly managed. After series of frustration from the personnel of one of the foremost government facilities, I was referred to the ocularist, after some sessions, now, my artificial eye sits properly in the socket since March 2018.

My son was born without his left eye, doctors say it is called anophthalmia, and a small conformer was gonna be fitted to create more space. After series of trials, none could fit into the small space. I was then referred to the ocularist by one of the ophthalmic surgeons. We had series of visits to expand the socket, before the eye was made. My son is doing well, his birthday is every May. We had his prosthesis made at 3months old.
